Blackie (born Oct. 2004) - Racing name: Lornas choice , rehomed by PAWS in December 2007

I have liked the look of greyhounds since my childhood; they looked so elegant yet resolutely in different pictures. It was my secret dream to have a greyhound. In 2007 this dream has come true. I have read an internet article about rehoming of greyhounds from Ireland and decided to adopt any greyhound immediately. Shortly before Christmas 2007, we have brought Blackie home. He was transported together with other greyhounds to Prague and we picked him up there. Since we live in a row house with a long back garden, I was sure Blackie will enjoy his new life. I had been informed that greyhounds may have problems with pet dogs and we have a Bolognese dog named Ben. During the first three or four weeks, both dogs were somehow alerted but everything went fine and they have settled their new situation soon: Blackie likes to eat Ben´s food and Ben tries to control Blackie by barking from time to time (but Blackie does not care). Often they are lying side by side at a sofa and enjoy it very much.

For Blackie does not like cats at all, I wondered what will happen when he sees two cats owned by our neighbours. He is always barking like hell when they are in their garden but when Theo, one of the cats, came to our garden one evening, Blackie did no harm to him; he was just standing close by Theo and barking.

As far as the garden is concerned, Blackie enjoys it. All our neighbours have dogs and they are running in their gardens often when the weather is acceptable. It is possible to observe something I call a “dog´s assembly” when the dogs from three adjoining gardens (a Poodle, a Westie, our Bolognese and Blackie) meet to “discuss their daily news”. Blackie has got also other dog-friends; they are other rehomed greyhounds who he likes to meet, a Thai Ridgeback female living in the neighbourhood or a Whippet female owned by our relatives. Generally Blackie likes to walk outside at a lash and prefers temperatures lower than +20 degrees C. Therefore autumn, winter and early spring are his favourite seasons. He dislikes summer for it is too hot for him sometimes. If it is a very warm summer day, Blackie even enjoys jumping to a pool or a river to cool. In such a case he is even swimming in the water, however in a bit funny, clumsy way.

Generally, Blackie is a “coach potato” who prefers to spend nearly the whole day dreaming nice dreams at a sofa or wherever it is comfortable for him. We have never faced any problems with him since he came to our house and I cannot imagine a nicer, kinder and more loving dog. He likes also children of nearly any age – we have been visited by friends with children aged from 2 years upwards and even if they tried to cuddle Blackie in their clumsy way, he never objected and enjoyed the time with the babies. Blackie has become a member of our family and I am very happy he lives with us.
